Title Slide showing a bag of garbage on the curb depicting the Ferpa Business Attraction project.

Project Scope

Quick Overview

The FERPA Business Attraction project was designed to:

  • Research and gather information for FERPA about Municipal Solid Waste operations in Canada.

  • Work with FERPA to determine the feasibility of investment in Manitoba through the development of a manufacturing facility.

  • Connect with surrounding municipalities to gather information and provide research to FERPA to determine if Lac du Bonnet would be a suitable location for a manufacturing facility.

Key Priorities of Focus

This project focuses on three of the CDC’s Key Priorities.

Marketing & Branding

Tourism Development

Business Development

Sustainability & Operations

June

Site Visits and Community Profile Reports

In June, representation from FERPA visited Lac du Bonnet and one other Eastern community for site visits as part of the site selection process. Directly following the visit, the Lac du Bonnet CDC prepared a community profile report specific to the information and details needed to make a location decision and aid with the FERPA Business Attraction.

Communications with FERPA are ongoing as they continue to examine Eastern Manitoba as the location of its first Canadian facility. The Lac du Bonnet CDC continues to offer support to FERPA by gathering and supplying information and connecting FERPA with Canadian Organizations that specialize in this type of development project.

If successful in this business attraction endeavour, Lac du Bonnet could be home to a new processing plant that will initially create 60 to 80 jobs.

March to Ongoing

Conducting Research

Since then, the CDC has been working with FERPA in an effort to have the first Canadian FERPA facility built in Lac du Bonnet.

This facility would be the first of its kind in Canada and act as a pilot facility that would be used to showcase the process to other municipalities across the country. The method used by FERPA allows for the transformation of all Municipal Solid Waste. The FERPA Process allows items like food waste, single-use coffee cups, straws, plastic bags, dirty diapers, pet waste bags, bottles, paper, jars, PPE, Rubber, Leather, Clothing, yard waste and more to be transformed into repurposed products, keeping these items from accumulating in landfills and from harming the environment.

The Lac du Bonnet CDC gathered statistics and information from various sources and other municipalities to aid FERPA in deciding whether Manitoba would be a viable location for a FERPA facility. The CDC has provided information to local municipalities and organizations through presentations and has connected FERPA with several organizations and resources for its entry into Canada.

February

Project Start

In February, the Lac du Bonnet CDC was approached, through our developed network, to take advantage of a Foreign Investment Opportunity whereby Municipal Solid Waste is transformed into a concrete-like product that can be moulded into many different configurations. This project started as a research and networking contract between the Lac du Bonnet CDC and FERPA.
